The Apistos (‘The Unbelievable’)

The Apistos (literally translates as ‘The Unbelievable’) was a vast merchant ship that recent research suggests embarked from the Red Sea port of Myos Hormos around the turn of the first century. The ship was constructed at Myos Hormos, the parts having travelled overland from Alexandria. The boat was commissioned by a freedman named Aulus Calidius Amotan from Antioch and was considered a huge feat of engineering. It may have been the colossal weight of the cargo that caused it to sink. The precise whereabouts of the wreck is unknown.
